Our Approach
Our Approach
The Tertulia Project is committed to responsible cross cultural learning and service, grounded in dialogue, reciprocity, and collaboration with communities. Our programs are guided by principles that prioritize local leadership, participant safety, and ethical cross-cultural engagement.
Participant Protection and Wellbeing
The safety and wellbeing of both participants and community members are central to The Tertulia Project. We work with trusted local partners and implement clear program guidelines to ensure that all engagement takes place in respectful, responsible, and safe environments.
Our safeguarding approach includes:
Clear expectations for participant conduct
Partnerships with pre-vetted local organizations
Respect for community spaces, schools, and vulnerable populations
Supervision and guidance during volunteer activities
Program structures that prioritize dignity, safety, and mutual respect
We are committed to maintaining environments where both visitors and community members feel respected and protected.
Community Collaboration
The Tertulia Project operates through a community-led collaboration model.
We partner with local organizations, educators, and community leaders in Colombia to support initiatives defined by the communities themselves. Our goal is not to impose solutions, but to contribute to efforts that are already meaningful and locally driven.
Our partnerships emphasize:
Respect for local expertise and leadership
Long-term, trust-based relationships
Collaboration with community-based organizations
Alignment with locally identified priorities
Shared learning between participants and host communities
We believe meaningful intercultural engagement begins with listening, grows through shared experience, and is sustained through long-term partnerships.
Responsible Volunteering
International volunteer programs can, unintentionally, reinforce stereotypes or create short-term interventions that do not benefit communities. The Tertulia Project is committed to a more thoughtful model.
Our approach to volunteer engagement prioritizes:
Community-defined initiatives
Participation aligned with participants’ skills
Dialogue and reflection alongside service
Economic support for local businesses and partners
Sustainable forms of tourism that strengthen communities rather than displace them
Through this model, volunteering becomes part of a broader process of learning, relationship-building, and responsible global engagement.
Program Impact | Impacto del Programa
The Tertulia Project is designed to strengthen communities through partnership, dialogue, and responsible economic participation. Rather than viewing local communities as sites of service, we work alongside community leaders, organizations, artists, and entrepreneurs to support initiatives that are already meaningful and locally driven.
Whenever possible, The Tertulia Project prioritizes hiring individuals from the communities where programs take place. Local coordinators, guides, drivers, cooks, and facilitators play a central role in the experience. By creating employment opportunities within the community, the program ensures that economic benefits remain local and that participants learn directly from those who know the region best.
Local leadership is essential to the program model. Community partners help shape volunteer activities, cultural experiences, and conversations so that engagement reflects real community priorities rather than external assumptions.
The Tertulia Project also provides a platform for local artists, musicians, storytellers, and cultural practitioners to share their work and perspectives. Cultural workshops, performances, and community conversations allow participants to experience the region through the voices and creativity of the people who live there.
These collaborations help sustain local cultural traditions while creating opportunities for artists to reach new audiences and generate income through their craft.
Economic sustainability is an important part of responsible tourism. The Tertulia Project intentionally works with small and medium-sized businesses in the community, including local restaurants, coffee farms, family-run guesthouses, transportation providers, and neighborhood markets.
By partnering with local entrepreneurs, the program contributes to the local economy while giving participants a more authentic understanding of everyday life in the region.
Volunteer engagement is designed to support projects identified by community organizations rather than short-term tasks created for visitors. Whether working with youth programs, community spaces, environmental initiatives, or local social organizations, participants collaborate in ways that complement ongoing community efforts.
This approach ensures that volunteering is aligned with local priorities and contributes to work that continues long after the program ends.
The Tertulia Project promotes a form of tourism that prioritizes relationships, respect, and long-term partnership. By investing in local leadership, supporting community enterprises, and fostering cross-cultural dialogue, the program seeks to demonstrate that international engagement can strengthen communities rather than displace or exploit them.
Through this model, travel becomes an opportunity not only for learning but also for supporting the people and places that make the experience possible.
At its core, The Tertulia Project is about building relationships that strengthen communities on both sides of the exchange.
